The mutant vampires in I Am Legend became mutant vampires because they were exposed to a genetically re-engineered strain of the measles virus in order to cure cancer (courtesy of Emma Thompson’s ambitious doctor). Back in December, when vaccine trials were nearing their completion, the rumours that vaccines created vampires became so insistent that Reuters had to publish a factcheck article to deny it.

This isn’t necessarily a new development. I Am Legend has entered the pandemic conversation because a small but insistent group has started to ask a simple question: “Wait, did those nice people turn into mutant vampires because they took the Covid vaccine?”

Coming towards the tail end of his turn as the world’s biggest movie star, the film saw a lone Smith struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic New York that had been ravaged by mutant vampires (that look more like zombies). In further exploring the world that I Am Legend created, I Am Legend 2 can answer a wide variety of questions 15 years in the making. No matter which path I Am Legend 2decides to take regarding the development of the Darkseekers, the sequel is the perfect opportunity to clear up the confusion surrounding the main antagonists of the franchise. You will remember I Am Legend. Leaning into the idea that the Darkseekers are the next evolutionary step in the novel, the time between the two films could give the creatures time to evolve into the brand new race they were originally designed to be by Matheson.Ĭlarifying the Darkseeker's species isn't the only issue that I Am Legend 2 is poised to tackle, with the most pressing of all being how the sequel will handle bringing back I Am Legend's protagonist, Robert Neville. As a result, I Am Legend 2 could pull more lore from the novel - including their advanced intelligence and speech capability - to distinguish between I Am Legend's Darkseekers and regular zombies. I Am Legend 2 could also look to its source material to help clear up this Darkseeker confusion. Based on Richard Matheson's book of the same name, I Am Legend goes into further detail regarding the Darkseekers, placing them much closer to the traditional vampire.
